Friday night I had to make a tour to pick-up all the necessary spare parts for the weekend. During the Friday free practice some parts broke down and needed to be arranged last minute. Wout and I drove from Soest to Venlo to Lananken (BEL) to Hockenheim it was a long trip even with a fast car like the Volvo 850 T5-R.
I had a good but short sleep and started to work on the 2 cars that I had to run this weekend. One Ford Mustang from 1965 driven by Karen Campagne and a Ford Falcon from 1964 driven by Frits Campagne. The Time practice went oke for Karen but Frits came in to the pit-lane with a oil temperature problem. After a small fire caused by the oil leakage we tried to change the head gasket on the right engine bank for the first race. I tried hard but the construction of the exhaust cost me a lot of time to remove it. After that sad back it was impossible to make it on time for the race. Karen Drove the first race without any technical problems. I continued on the engine of Frits till everything was ready to start the engine again. We tried to start it but nothing would work to make the engine run. Meanwhile all the drivers from the NK htgt where enjoying the BBQ and where standing me by (mentally). We decided to take out all the spark plugs to check if that caused the problem. And it did one of the plugs on the left engine bank had a bended electrode caused by something that had hit it. We decided that this we didn’t want to put in a new one before we know sure that there is nothing wrong inside the other cylinder head. This to prevent more damage if the engine will start.
Sunday Frits was not racing because his engine was not working anymore but he stayed to support the other drivers. Karen drove a god race and was in a cat-fight with a Fiat Abarth. The Fiat over toke here a couple of times but at the finish line Karen beaded him by just the length of the Mustang.
Then we packed our stuff and drove home safely. The next event for the NK HTGT will be 22-24 may the Historic Zandvoort Trophy. For more info check www.nkhtgt.nl
